About Luke Matthews

After more than 20 years in various operations roles across different industries, Luke Matthews founded Ops Smart Solutions in 2024. His goal is to leverage his extensive knowledge to help e-commerce companies improve efficiencies and reduce costs as an independent consultant and fractional operations leader.

With new e-commerce companies launching daily and others facing challenging growth periods, Luke recognized that many lack the budget for full-time operations employees or have specific projects requiring expertise beyond their internal capabilities. Having encountered these situations himself, Luke is driven by the goal of assisting these companies through their challenges, helping position them for future growth.

Luke handles the bulk of projects personally, ensuring that you benefit from his wealth of knowledge and expertise. However, if the project requires additional assistance, he will tap into his extensive network to enlist the ideal partner to collaborate on the project.

Experience

Entering the e-commerce operations space

Luke started in e-commerce operations nearly 15 years ago with the startup Tommie Copper. Over the next seven years, he guided the company from pre-revenue status to becoming a major player in the compression clothing space. Along the way he setup the companies domestic manufacturing, before expanding production to South America and eventually Asia. As the company grew, he leveraged increased volumes to reduce costs by expanding and relocating manufacturing around the world. He also established a world-class call center and oversaw several 3PL selections and transitions driven by volume growth. He implemented best-in-class forecasting and planning practices and played a crucial role in the company's new product development.

Continued Success With High Growth Brands

Luke has served several e-commerce companies, leveraging his expertise across diverse areas to drive cost reduction and operational efficiency enhancements. Among his achievements are establishing a partnership with a reverse logistics provider, aiding a company in attaining its sustainability objectives. He has also revamped customer service departments to minimize returns and elevate customer satisfaction levels. Luke has optimized shipping solutions, resulting in reduced delivery times and costs. Additionally, he has conducted evaluations of companies' 3PL and manufacturing partner relationships, ensuring alignment with their strategic objectives. In cases where adjustments were needed, he has led searches for new partners and managed transitions seamlessly.

Helping a foreign company with US growth

For the past two years, Luke has overseen the US operations for the British company Papier. With ambitious growth objectives in the US market, the company required a dedicated leader to initiate and execute pivotal projects. During this period, Luke spearheaded various initiatives to propel the company towards its growth targets. These efforts involved selecting and establishing the company's inaugural US-based 3PL, enhancing partnerships with print-on-demand manufacturing collaborators to streamline product delivery lead times and orchestrating the successful launch of a wholesale program. This program resulted in Papier's products being stocked in nearly 900 stores across the US, including retailers such as Anthropologie, Barnes & Noble, and Urban Outfitters.
